New to crochet? You’re in exactly the right place. This page walks you through what to learn, in what order, so you can go from “I’ve never held a hook” to “I made my first toy” without feeling lost.

Step 1: Get the right (small) kit
You need a hook (3 mm or 3.5 mm), some smooth light-coloured cotton yarn, stuffing, a stitch marker and a yarn needle. That’s genuinely it. Our Tools & Yarn guides explain what to buy and what to skip.
Step 2: Learn the magic ring
Almost every amigurumi starts with a magic ring. It feels clumsy at first, and that’s normal. You’ll find step-by-step help in our Stitch Tutorials.
Step 3: Learn three stitches
Single crochet, increase and decrease. With just those three, you can make most beginner toys.
Step 4: Learn to read a pattern
Brackets, repeats and stitch counts are easier than they look. Our Beginner Basics section decodes them line by line.
Step 5: Make your first toy
Pick something small with only one or two pieces from our Free Patterns, then work up to toys with more parts to sew together.
Step 6: Keep a troubleshooting list handy
When something looks off, our Tips & Fixes section has quick answers to the problems every beginner runs into.
Go slowly, count your stitches, and be kind to yourself. Every maker’s first toy is a little wonky. That’s part of the charm.
